Saturday spotlight - #PegwellBay is a shallow inlet in the English Channel coast along the #IsleofThanet from #Ramsgate and home to a large stretch of chalk sea cliffs and a internationally significant nature reserve. It's the only ancient dune pasture in Kent, and is made up of seashore habitats: inter-tidal mudflats, saltmarsh, shingle beach, sand dunes, wave cut platform and coastal scrubland. Migrating waders and wildfowl can be seen in winter or during the spring and autumn.

In nearby #Cliffsend, overlooking the bay on the clifftop, is the Viking Ship 'Hugin', a replica of a the Viking ship that sailed from Denmark to Thanet in 1949 to celebrate the 1,500th anniversary of the invasion of Britain, the traditional landing of Hengist and Horsa and the betrothal of Hengist's daughter, Rowena, to King Vortigen of Kent. Out of 53 crewmen only the navigator, Peter Jensen, was a professional seaman. Why not go off the beaten track this weekend to find Pegwell Bay, by foot or bike, using the Isle's #VikingCoastalTrail to guide you (go to our website for details and a map or pick one up in our #Margate and #Ramsgate Visitor Information Centres)
